The Awutu Senya District Assembly on 6th December 2019 awarded its farmers and fishers who during the year worked assiduously to provide food within the district and the country at large. The event which was organized at Aberful in the Senya Bereku District was graced by the presence of hardworking farmers and fishers.
The youth within the district were encouraged by the District Chief Executive (DCE) Hon. Stephen Kwame Quaye to venture into farming; he added, it is the vision of the NPP government to modernize agriculture, improve production efficiency, achieve food security and make profitably agriculture very lucrative for both farmers and fishers. He stated the Planting for Food and Jobs programme is running smoothly within the District and within this year, three thousand, six hundred and fifty-three (3,653) bags of NPK has been supplied, whereas two thousand, three hundred twenty (2,320) bags of UREA have been supplied to farmers within the district. On the Fall Army Worm, the government of Ghana distributed free fall army worm chemicals of about one hundred and eighteen (118) liters and hundred (100) grams of agro chemicals were given to six hundred and sixty-five (665) farmers. Under planting for export and rural development programme, he touted twenty four thousand, five hundred and thirty (24,530) coconut seedlings were distributed to four hundred and ninety (490) farmers. And about three hundred and seventy seven acres of land were cultivated.

DCE DELIVERING HIS SPEECH AT THE FARMERS DAY CELEBRATION
The District Director of Agric, Mr. Joseph Odame said, farmers in the District were trained on
good agriculture practices and said the assembly is forever grateful to Mondelez Cocoa- Life
program for raising seventy thousand(70,000) cocoa seedlings in twenty (20) communities.
Mondelez also supported farmer unions with over Three Hundred and fifty-one Ghana Cedis
(GHS351, 000.00) as premium and also provided farmers with agro-chemicals, motorize
sprayers, pruners and slashers.
AGRIC DIRECTOR GIVING HIS SPEECH
Speaking on the theme for the celebration ‘Enhancing Small Scale Agriculture Towards Agribusiness
Development’. He said the government intends to gradually shift the focus of agriculture in
Ghana from a subsistence farming approach to an agri-business approach using 2019 National
Farmers Day as a starting point. The small scale fishing (aquaculture) sector in Ghana for
example comprise of about two thousand, two hundred (2,200) farmers, each producing less than
50mt of fish per annum. Production for 2018 from small scale farmers was 11,069mt against a
total aquaculture production of 76,620mt.
Awards were presented to deserving hardworking farmers and fishermen’s within the District.
YOOBSA FARMS from Obrayeko was presented with an award for being district best livestock
farmer and received table top fridge, one and half piece of cloth, Wellington boot, cutlass and
knapsack sprayer. GLOBAL TROPIC was presented with an award for being district best fish
farmer with a presentation of deep freezer, Wellington boot, cutlass and knapsack sprayer. Peter
Asani emerged as the district best youth farmer with a table top fridge wellington boot, cutlass,
motorbike and knapsack sprayer. Mohammed Tanko was awarded the district best physically
challenged farmer with a presentation of incubator (276 eggs capacity), one and half piece of
cloth, cutlass and knapsack sprayer.
Joseph Kwame Armah was the 1st runner up farmer in the district who received a doubled decker
fridge, one and half piece of cloth, wellington boot, and cutlass and knapsack sprayer. Felix
Quaye was 2nd runner up with a presentation of single door fridge, one and half piece of cloth,
wellington boot, and cutlass and knapsack sprayer.
MR. OBENG RECEIVING HIS AWARDS AND CERTIFICATE
Mr. Emmanuel Obeng was adjudged the overall best farmer within the district in the year 2019. He received a double decker fridge, one and half piece of cloth, wellington boot, cutlass, Knapsack sprayer, bicycle, motorbike and a certificate. He acknowledged his contenders efforts and encouraged others to also work hard to be honored. He is a successful entrepreneur with current ownership of six barber shops providing direct employment to twenty-six youth in Awutu Senya District and beyond. He is also a commercial transport owner that provides services to the people within the District and some other parts of Central Region. He has a total of 214 acres of food crops situated at Akoninsi, Bawjiase, Obrachire and parts of Ago East District. He has about 105 goats, 17 sheep and a small-scaled poultry farm. He is a popular philanthropic classroom instructor and a proud successful farmer.
